Listening Well

Recently, we went out to dinner with a group of people we were just getting to know.  The group was an eclectic mix, for sure; a businessman, educator, person in the medical field, someone from retail, a counselor (Laurie) and a software entrepreneur (Brian).  It was interesting to us that we were able to land on a topic that seemed to be crucial in each one of these diverse areas. The conversation centered on how “listening” was vital in any relationship (business or personal) and how we, as a society, [...]

Staying Connected!

Recently, we met with a family that was looking to relocate to our area from out of state.  They have a son with a disability and wanted to know about services and funding. His disability is quite different than Mary’s as his challenges are physical and Mary’s are primarily cognitive (and behavioral).  Because of this and the fact that he is 17 years younger than Mary, we didn’t know all of the answers to their questions.  But we knew people who did know the answers and quickly made some phone [...]

The “S” Word …

Can you believe it is our twentieth blog?  Can you also believe that we’ve done 20 blogs on marriage and we are only now getting to talk about sex?  Of course, you can.  We all know that sex is incredibly important to a marriage, but we rarely talk about it.  In fact, most of us probably talk about it face-to-face with our spouse even less.  And if it is hard to discuss, imagine how hard it is to write a blog on the subject!!!  But we risk our pride and [...]

To help or not to help, that is the question!

A commonly asked questions that we hear from friends who don’t have a child with a disability is, “Should we offer to help someone when their disabled child has a need, or will offering help offend the parents?”  We generally know how we would answer that question, but this is an individual decision.  We would love to hear some feedback on this, as we think this topic might provide for an interesting conversation! Because Mary is non-verbal, she often tries to communicate her wishes and desires through her behavior, more [...]

This past summer, we had the opportunity to speak at several Joni and Friends Camps.  This camp was started by the ministry of Joni Eareckson Tada and is for families that are affected by disability. (We encourage you to check out these nationwide camps via this LINK).  We shared things that God has taught us and things we wish someone would have told us when we were first married.  Every camp has its own unique personality, but certain items always generated a lot of discussion.  Perhaps, one of our most controversial [...]

Finding Time For Each Other

Facebook, I think, has changed how we live and think about ourselves.  I love that I have been able to reconnect with old friends on FB and find out what is going on in their lives; but I hate the fact that looking at Facebook can also make us feel worse about our lives.  Too often, we allow ourselves to compare our lives to those of our friends' on Facebook, and we are led to believe that we come up woefully short.  Everyone’s life “seems” more exciting and glamorous than [...]

You are on the same team!

Everywhere you look there is evidence that the Fall Sports season is soon upon us. High school students are waking up early for practice.  Parents are at the sporting goods store buying shin guards and shoulder pads and coaches of every level are giving interviews extolling the merits of TEAMWORK! “Teamwork” is essential to the success of any athletic team, but it is equally important to our marriages.  Sometimes in our marriages, it feels like we are working against each other; therefore, we believe that it is essential that you [...]
