One of our kids (not sure which one) used to have a t-shirt that said “Believe there is Good in the World”! I think it is important to both believe there is good in the world and to BE the good in the world. Sometimes, with all that is in the news lately, it is hard to always see the good that is out there. We’d like to encourage you by sharing an incredible example of “Good in the World”, especially for those of us who are parenting a child with special needs.
A wonderful event is happening literally around the world on February 8th. The Tim Tebow Foundation is sponsoring “A Night to Shine”. On February 8th, in 600 cities, in 20 countries, with 200,000 volunteers, churches around the world will be hosting a prom-like event that seeks to honor and celebrate individuals with special needs. As Tim Tebow explained in an interview, “It’s more than just a dance or prom. It is a night where people get to understand their worth. They get to understand that God loves them and they are worth all of us coming together to throw the biggest event in their town for them!” At the end of the evening, all participants (He is estimating 100,000 individuals, world-wide) will be crowned King or Queen of the prom. Both of us have been involved in this event and Mary has attended the last 3 years. It is truly a magical event, including red carpet walks (with lots of paparazzi!), limo rides, dinner, dancing, make-up and hair prep before the event and much more! Beyond how wonderful the evening is for the participants, we have been overwhelmed by how many people volunteer and invest themselves in this event. It definitely makes you say “I believe there is good in the world!”
For those of you who have a child who could participate, we encourage you to see where (and if there is still availability) there is a “Night to Shine” event close to you. For those of you who do not have a child who might attend, we encourage you to follow this event and be encouraged by the fact that there are good individuals in the world that desire to honor and celebrate our special kids!
